Ford Focus Midgets to Make Speedbowl History in 2006

The Ford Focus Midget Series Northeast Division season-opener Saturday night, April 29 will be the first USAC-sanctioned show in Waterford Speedbowl’s long history. Series Director Steve Wall and Speedbowl General Manager Bill Roth are both excited.

“It is amazing that after 55 continuous years of offering motorsports the Speedbowl is still making history,” says Roth. “It is more than appropriate that it involves Midgets.”

The Speedbowl did present Midget shows sanctioned by USAC’s predecessor, the American Automobile Association (AAA) in the early 1950s. Midget Hall of Famer Art Cross won an AAA sanctioned 100 lapper in October of 1951 (the Speedbowl’s initial season). USAC replaced AAA in 1956.

The Focus Midgets are part of a diverse 2006 Speedbowl schedule that kicks off with the 10th annual Budweiser Modified Nationals, featuring the SK-150, on April 1-2. In addition to the Speedbowl’s standard fare – Late Models, Sportsman, Mini Stocks and Legends – the AllStar Race Trucks, Pro4 Modifieds, Allison Legacy Cars and Northeastern Midget Association are on the agenda.

Wall believes the three/eights Speedbowl is a perfect location to show off his charges. “One/third-to-three/eights ovals are the kind of tracks we like to run on,” he said acknowledging the facility’s long Midget involvement. “I believe we can add to that history.”

The Northeast is one of several regional series for the non-winged, self-starting, spec-engine powered Focus Midgets. “We have several members looking forward to the Speedbowl,” says Wall. “I believe we’ll be very competitive.”

There are few secrets left when it comes to the Midgets at the Speedbowl. Wall believes that bodes well for a group that was very competitive (five winners) in its first season a year ago. “We are, of course, anxious to prove ourselves to the Speedbowl fans,” he says.
