Oswego Speedway - Sunday, September 4th

sboropass1.jpg (29667 bytes)

OSWEGO, NY -- The Oswego Speedway has been very good to Ford Focus Midget Series driver Mike Sboro this season. Twice this season, his trip around the oval resulted in a stop in victory lane. Of course with the large crowd Classic Weekend at Oswego commands, this win was perhaps a little more special.

"This is awesome. The fans are great. There's so many people here that it's an awesome event and I'd love to come back next year," said Sboro, who now resides in North Carolina.

For 22 laps, Sboro was bedeviled by wily race leader Nick Wean. When Sboro moved to the outside, Wean countered to the outside. When Sboro moved inside, Wean recovered. If the race didn't feature the kind of flurried passing and darting the class is noted for, it made up for it with the compelling swerves and parries at the top of the column. Sboro just bided his time, waiting for his moment.

"I was keeping an eye on the laps going into turn two. I knew the longer we went the more he was going to wear out," Sboro said. "He's a great racer and I love racing with him. I tried him on the inside a couple of times and I tried him on the outside. I just didn't have the position to get him on the inside. He might have been able to see me, he might not. We're still doing the points thing and I didn't want him to come down on me. I was just patient and patience paid off eventually."

With Sboro and Wean dancing at the top of the column, most of the passing action was relegated to the following three in pursuit. By lap three, Jeff Abold had penetrated the top five, passing Stephanie Stevens on the inside in the near straightaway. By the fifth lap, Ryan Osborne, Ryan Smith and Abold were in positions three through five. On lap six, Abold passed Smith to assume fourth place. He passed Osborne shortly thereafter to take third.

A lap 22 caution gave Sboro his chance. From go, Sboro glanced at the inside, but then swung quickly outside to overleap Wean.

"Coming out of the restart, we kind of played some bumper tag coming to the start and finish line and I saw him hug that bottom line coming out of two," he said. "If there was daylight at the bottom I was going to go but he gave me nothing so I went for the outside – no holding back."

Within a few short moments, Wean had fallen out of the top five entirely and was off to the pits.
With Wean out of the way, Abold was never able to provide Sboro with a foil and the Watertown native simply expanded the distance between his No. 24 car and the chasing pack. Abold, Stevens, Smith and Shaun Gosselin followed Sboro across the finish line in order.

Andersen Wins Boston Louie Classic for Ford Focus

by Dale Wobrink

Seekonk, MA:  Brit Andersen of Branford, CT made history with his win at Seekonk Speedway on Saturday night, August 27, 2005. Andersen will enter the record books as the first-ever winner in the Ford Focus Midget portion of the Boston Louie Seymour Memorial Classic. Andersen took the lead from Ryan Smith on lap four of the 9th Annual Boston Louie Seymour Memorial Classic and never looked back. The Focus Midgets joined their sister division, the Northeastern Midget Association in the festivities of the prestigious event for the first time this season.

The Boston Louie Seymour Memorial was started back in 1997 as a tribute to the man who helped shape Midget Racing in New England. "Boston" Louie Seymour, the patriarch of the Seymour Family of Marlborough, MA, made his name nationally in the open-wheel ranks with drivers like Kenny Schrader. Although a national treasure, it is right here at home in New England where is influence is most keenly felt. His family continues in his tradition as evidenced by their involvement with the Ford Focus Series in the Northeast.

The Seymour Family introduced the Ford Focus Midget in the Northeast in 2004. With the help of Steve Wall and a dedicated bunch of officials and competitors the Northeast Series continues to grow.

Andersen jumped from his third-place starting position to take the lead on the opening lap of the 29-lap feature but it was all for not as the pass was negated by a spin by the Shawn Gosselin. On the complete restart, Ryan Smith resumed his position on the pole.

This time it took Andersen three laps to assert himself as the leader once again. Under racing conditions, Andersen began to stretch his lead. By lap 10, he had a straightaway lead over the Smith. A single lap later, Aaron Wall motored into second position over Smith. The duel between Wall and Smith was far from over. Smith battled back to reclaim second and Wall began to backslide. Michael Sboro had worked his way into second while multi-time feature winner Jeff Abold had moved into the top five.

The second caution of the night flew on lap 15 for a spin Dana Messier. On the restart, Andersen continued to show the way with Smith, Sboro, Abold and Wall in tow. Sboro, Abold and Wall made quick work of Smith sending him back to the fifth spot before the third and final caution flew on lap 17 for an incident that involved Ginny Quinones.

Once back to action, the event went green the remainder of the way with Andersen taking down the win over Sboro, Abold and Wall inside the top-five. Nick Wean, Stephanie Stevens, Wade Mattesen, Gosselin and Adam Fusco rounded out the top-ten. It was an excellent run for go-kart and quarter midget racer Fusco who was making his first-ever start in the Focus.

Nick Wean and Ben Seitz split $500 as the winners of the "Team Competition" presented by Wirtgen America. Prior to the event, NEMA driver Seitz was randomly paired with Wean to form a "team." The duo had the highest combined finish and split the bonus that Wirtgen put up for this added element to the Boston Louie.

In Focus action, heat race wins went to Wean and Brit Andersen.

Northeast Ford Focus Series Opens Season at Oswego

On Saturday, May 14th the USAC Ford Focus Midget Series took to the Oswego pavement for the first race of an eleven race schedule. A field of 13 Focus Midgets were on hand, to take the first green flag of the season.

Jeff Abold and Stephanie Stevens were the heat winners, by virtue of heat win points and passing points awarded. Jeff Abold was awarded the pole position. In a blind draw to set the "A" main lineup, Abold drew a number 4 pill which inverted 4 positions with the pole winner starting in 4th position.

With skies darkening, Stevens and Ryan Smith brought the field to the "A: main green. A Jeff Abold spin in turn one caused a quick yellow. On the restart, Kyle Bonsignore of Bay Shore, NY took a nasty ride in turn four flipping his Hawk Chassis some five times. Kyle was a bit shaken and sustained a minor ankle injury as a result of the wild ride.

The next restart saw Stevens in front for one lap until another minor spin occurred in turn four. The red flag was displayed for a brief period of rain and the Oswego track crew made quick work of drying the racing surface fifteen minutes later. The lap two restart produced some great racing throughout the pack. At the front was Smith, Stevens, Rick Wean, and Mike Sboro who made the trip up from Mooresville, NC.

A few short cautions for spins in turn three tightened up the field for a close finsh. At the checkered, it was Ryan Smith of Kunkletown, PA, in his S&S Speedway Stealth taking the win, followed closely by Wean, Sboro, and Stevens.

The next USAC Northeast Ford Focus Series race is scheduled for June 11th at the Adirondack International Speedway in New Bremen, NY.
